4th of July recap
Or "how to put on 5 pounds in 4 days." Thursday went pretty well. Chris ended ahead the blackjack table, and even at Pai Gow Poker. Me, I was down $8 total... but only if you count the $15 in gas that it took to get there, the $5 I spent for dinner at Mickey D's, $4 in my usual casino souvenirs (cancelled decks and dice), and $2 in tips for the cocktail waitress (I don't count tips for the dealer; I take those off the table instead of out of my pocket.) Otherwise I was up $18. Friday was spent doing some cleaning in preparation for picking up my little brother Raoul and his girlfriend Courtney from the airport. We promptly hit Chick-Fil-A (there's a funny little story about him and CFA), followed by the Market District in the South Hills, followed by a touch-up trip to the Mart of Wal. What's funny is that in NYC, real estate is at such a premium, there are no really huge grocery stores. So when he was here last year, we went to the Giant Eagle in Robinson. That was pretty big. This year we went to the GE Market District in the South Hills. That's even bigger. We got yelled at for trying to pick up the $140 hunks of Canadian cheddar. So after that was D&B's. Pretty standard stuff. Night of Bacon, also standard stuff. Well, except for Raoul, since he'd never done one before. Here's the link to his account. Mmm, sausagewich. Saturday. Oh, Saturday. We made corndog batter, beer batter, and funnel cake batter. We batter-dipped and deep-fried hot dogs, andouille, cheddarwurst, kielbasa, Totino's frozen triple meat pizza, White Castle burgers, catfish, cauliflower, frozen pats of butter wrapped in bacon, Snickers, Milky Ways, 3 Musketeers, duplex cookies, and Pocky. Things we deep fried without batter dipping first included octopus hot dogs, biscuits (the kind you get in a can, deep fried and rolled around in sugar, oh so good,) and pierogies. We sadly did not get around to doing anything with the 18" hot dogs, Italian sausage, rabbit, chicken wings, Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, portabello mushrooms, Oreos, frozen Peeps, frozen marshmallows, frozen canelles of cheesecake-in-a-tub, pound cake, frozen Rice Krispies treats, or the Matchbox LeSabre. Then there was fizzball. Aumiller defended his title with a 42' shot into my hot peppers. My spare spare sand wedge made a guest appearance to get rid of cans that hadn't burst, but weren't throwable. Then there was gaming. A little 7 card stud, some Dominion, and a whole lot of Rock Band 2. Raoul got to show off as he and I took on Rude Mood. I showed off my awesome nerdcore hip hop skills by singing Livin' At The Corner Of Dude And Catastrophe with my back to the screen (Nikki: "You could have gold starred it if Bayani was just paying attention!") followed by Sabotage (bending backwards as I belt out "Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy -- hey, I can see the screen from here!") and So Whatcha Want (in which I nearly lost it because I caught Raoul upside down on the couch.) Trevor decides it would be funny to make me sing Hier Kommt Alex, Master Exploder, and Let There Be Rock. I got my revenge on him by selecting the Live version. It's a lot longer, a lot faster, and, well, a lot of tomfoolery is possible. With no cowbell part, I left during the third guitar solo to get myself a beer. Raoul (guitar) chimes in, "Hey, get me one too!" So I do. And I get him a straw and hold it up to his face so he can drink while playing. The fourth guitar solo opens up with the tremolos from hell, and it all rounds out with the world's longest Big Rock Ending. Raoul: [working the fret buttons and leaning over to Nikki] "Here, strum this for a while." [drinks beer] Trevor: "Bayani... Bayaaaaaaaniiiii.... You owe me a new pair of arms!" Totally worth it. Special thanks to my little brother, Courtney, Steve, Erica, Cheryl, T.J., Lynn, Trevor, Nikki, Diablo Dave, Tara, Dave White, Duggan, and nyauKate for coming and making it a great party. The rest of you, you shoulda been here, man! Sunday, bloody Sunday. Well, you can pretty much see what happened here. Chris came over to do some Quest scribing. Then there was grilling of rabbit, Italian sausage, chicken wings, portabello mushrooms, plus sauteed pierogies. Excellent. Monday I took off (thanks to the insane schedule I had in May.) Lounged around the house, and took Raoul and Courtney to Primanti's, which we sadly forgot to blog. (This would be for the non-Pittsburgher followers of Raoul's blog.) Drove them off to the airport, and ended my four day weekend at an Iron Heroes game. Awesome. | | Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 | | 5:51 pm |

This is what I get for digging up my old Toasters CDs
I wanna be in a ska band That's the reason I was born But I was born with asthma So I cannot blow a horn I thought I would play the guitar I'm pretty good with my hands But I found out the real thing Is nothing like Rock Band [Chorus] I don't wanna punch a clock all day I don't wanna hear what the customers say I don't wanna answer to the man I wanna be in a ska band Maybe I could be a vocalist But I'm always way off key I could sit behind a drum kit But I like my dignity I'm really good on keyboards But come on now, rudie, please Twelve years of piano lessons You can't skank to Für Elise [First eight bars of "Für Elise"] See? [Horn solo] [Chorus] Maybe I could dance around Like a wannabe Ben Carr But the only way that I can dance Is when I'm playing DDR So maybe it's not feasible To play ska to make my pay It's all a stupid pipe dream 'Cause ska's dead now anyways [Chorus] [Horn outro] [Spoken] Someone hand me my name tag. | | Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 | | 10:53 am |

PSA: Guitar Hero Arcade
One, it is at D&B's. Two, it SUCKS!It's like someone took the 360 version of GH3, removed the whammy bar, sprinkled in a few new songs, then broke the timing so it was like it was the PS2 version. And it's 8.0 chips to play! Nuts to that, just swing by my place and play the console version. You'll be a lot happier. Or better yet, play a more fun game, like Rock Band. | | Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 | | 1:11 pm |
A good idea turned into a bad idea
So in an attempt to learn something new, I've decided to resurrect my old CRPG project. Yeah, like I need anything else to chip into my copious free time. Can any of you recommend a language to work in, and a free database I can tinker with? | | Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 | | 9:33 pm |
For the quotes file
"Holy guacamole. What is Sig doing in my hole?" --Keith Colburn, captain of the Wizard, referring to Sig Hansen, captain of the Northwestern (And why did they bleep out Captain Andy saying "ass", but then not blur it out on the post-it note he's holding up?) [EDIT] They bleeped out the f-bomb, not "ass." Current Music: Discovery Channel, Deadliest Catch | | Monday, June 15th, 2009 | | 12:06 pm |
nor dame, nor mess
Damnit, they beat me to it. Well, it is only 8" high.... I've seen a WH40K Space Marine version of the Iwo Jima flag raising thing. For no good reason, I want to make one of Rodin's Thinker. Or the nativity. Watching the victory parade: Kate: "It's Malkin and the leafy trophy!" Me: "That's the Conn Smythe Trophy." Kate: "It's leafy. It has a large floppy leaf." Hats continue to be a right bitch to pattern, but at least I've got a form to test them on. Melted turkey netting can be used as a substitute for merry widow lace. Saves me $40. Finished the Fable II DLC. At a couple of different points, the game tries to bribe you with 10k, 15k, and 1M gold pieces. I currently have over 5M thanks to my real estate empire. What were they thinking? Hey, maybe now I can get to playing the first Penny Arcade game. | | Friday, June 12th, 2009 | | 10:44 pm |

sad me no res norm
For eliminating the team that eliminated the Devils, the Penguins have my blessing. Oh yeah, and they're not Detroit. Go Pens! Coincidentally, the Tigers are in town playing the Pirates. Airsoft guns are not like real guns -- they really don't want to be taken apart. I couldn't find a single visible screw on the damn thing. Hats are a right bitch to pattern. Thank Science I remember Algebra II and conical sections. Oh crumbs, I just remembered -- I have to do it twice. The natural sausage casing I bought from Wholey's a few weeks ago is labeled as "preserved in salt." Is this why there's no expiration date on it? I have a new grinder. I think I may have accidentally returned a part from the sausage stuffer in the process, in which case, it's time for another call to Kitchenaid. Is it me, or did Borders give up on manga? I can never find new releases there. I finished the new DLC pack for Saints Row 2. High speed sniping is very difficult, but not nearly as hard as piloting helicopters. Quote of the expansion: "Kill the mime. Do you really need a reason?" Nothing says "Thank you for buying" like infinite rocket ammo (and the setup for Saints Row 3.) I've bought a bunch of old, used PS2 games. Gamestop keeps sending me these 20% off coupons in my email, plus the 10% from the edge card. Now I just need to find the time to play them. Stop raining, damnit, I need to waterproof the stairs! And spraypaint things! | | Thursday, June 11th, 2009 | | 11:09 am |
Painting and guns question
When spray painting things with moving parts (like, say, an airsoft Walther P99) do you have to do anything special around said moving parts? I'd say mask them, but I need them to be the same color as the rest of the gun. Assuming the metallic sealer I got doesn't hose up the shine of the metallic paint, I'm going to guess that I need to go really light around the moving parts so they don't gum up. Is there anything you can do about the orange blaze tip? I mean, I know you need it on there for safety reasons, but how do you cover it up for photos? | | Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 | | 2:39 pm |

Cosplay: Getting a big head
If you've ever had to make a hat, what's the easiest way to build up a wig head to the size of your own head? Kate was thinking duct tape, but I don't think enough duct tape to build a 3" layer is cost effective. Maybe craft foam held in place by duct tape? | | Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 | | 3:01 pm |

I am Sixteen of Twenty-one. Hitting is futile. You will bust.
Hit Wheeling Island this past Saturday for their awesome buffet. I strongly suggest it. I also strongly suggest not eating before going in. They had melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi that I could have eaten all night long. They had a chocolate fountain at the dessert buffet. I figured out how to jam multiple skewers into a piece of cheesecake to get it in there. It would have been even worse if they had the white chocolate fountain. I didn't get to place that $33 bet though; it looked like roulette doesn't allow funny denominations like that. I broke even at Pai Gow Poker, but I, uh, lost $100 at the blackjack. You can ask Trevor how many 15s and 16s I got. Mostly 16s. But I demonstrated to Hillary and Kate that half the fun is the atmosphere. All three of us had a $15 table to ourselves, cheering Trevor's win, laughing at my bad luck, high fiving when a double down won, laughing more as I dug furiously for more money to split those stinkin' 8s.... Even though Chris lost money and I lost a bunch of money, we all had a good time. I unloaded my last $2 bill from Garasu tipping the dealer. She totally deserved it. So there it is. Chris and I were talking about going back on 7/2. Most of us have 7/3 off because 7/4 is a Saturday. Apparently the cheap tables ($5 blackjack and $2 craps) are only out Monday to Thursday, until 11 PM. Hey, at only $5 a hand, we could have been there three times as long. Anyone game? |
